The Elmtree Blues Society has held it's first official blues jam in France, and judging by the enthusiastic response and the fun everyone had there will be more in the near future. The First Occasional Elmtree Blues Jam in France was on December 21, 2005 at the restaurant Tierra Madre, in the ancient (2,200 years old) city of Narbonne, in the Languedoc region of southern France, near the Mediterranean sea and not far from Carcassonne. We are told by local musicians that this was the first-ever blues jam in Narbonne, so there is definitely a need! The restaurant proprietors, David & Christelle Sarraud, were really welcoming and generous, and David S. himself plays a mean blues harp. (Tierra Madre's food is great, too, here's the restaurant's link: http://www.texfred.com/tierra/ I recommend their fine fresh seafood, but it's all good!) The core group was assembled by Narbonne's own Jeff Hug, http://jeffhug.free.fr/ a true bluesman, good friend and generous jammer, on vocals, guitar, harp - and kazoo! Joining Jeff in the core group starting things off were gentle drummer Michel Geronimo (a graduate of the Percussion Institute of Technology in good ol' Hollywood, by the way) melodic and funky bassist Pascale Carpentier, and the globally infamous Nicolas ("Froggy") Fouquet on harmonica extraordinaire. These and all those that followed are not merely fine musicians, they are laid-back and generous souls, and lots of fun, too!
Dave Fertig et Nicolas Fouquet There is no shortage of fine and friendly blues players here, every post in the band at the First Occasional Elmtree Jam in France was covered at least three deep, the drummers were tight, the bass players were funky, the harp players (sauf moi) were hot and soulful, the guitarists searing and tasteful, and the singers were really alive and rockin' the joint! And the little dance floor was packed! The jam was classic Elmtree: everyone was welcome, and welcoming; everyone shared; and everyone had a good time, including the 50 or so non-playing observers (yes, we had to waive the Elmtree rules for this, it was after all a commercial establishment!) I must apologize for not having a better listing of the many other fine players who sat in, I hope to get a more complete line-up soon, and we will be inviting everyone for a jam here in the Languedoc area, perhaps in Carcassonne next time, hopefully in January. Stay tuned and keep jammin'! -Dave Fertig
